Lecturing at the 2nd InnoThyroGen Summer School of Bioinformatics

In the coming week, I will be travelling to Belgrade for the 2nd InnoThyroGen Summer School of Bioinformatics, which will run from September 8–12, 2026 at the Institute of Molecular Genetics and Genetic Engineering (IMGGE), University of Belgrade.

In my lecture I will be highlighting various aspects of doing Bioinformatics Consulting in the Wild: Observations from Academia, Health Care and Industry. In the more than 10 years that PolyOmica exists, we have worked for and with a range of clients, from private individuals to academic research groups, hospitals and pharma companies. Each client has its own range of budget, requirements, compute and database equipment, and staff skills. I’ll give several examples of each of these, the trade-offs that are made, what skills I found missing or needed polishing, etc. Going home, the audience should have answers to these kind of questions: As a young bioinformatician, what can you expect from these different future working environments? What skills are valued and will help you when you apply for a position?

InnoThyroGen is a project funded under the Horizon Europe funding scheme that aims to find innovative approaches to thyroid disease diagnosis and treatment. These approaches include technologies like Next Generation Sequencing (NGS), Polygenic Risk Score (PRS) and data sources like electronic health records and pharmacogenomics.
